ANYONE FOR TENNIS!

IMG-0711.JPG

There's quite a story behind this well known photograph of George Moore.

It was late 1957, and the great jockey had just won the first of his ten Sydney premierships. Ern McQuillan was sent to Moore's home one Sunday morning to get a picture of the jockey wearing colours, and carrying a saddle over his arm.

George, who had been on the tennis court, was happy to oblige provided the photo was taken from the waist up.

He could have been weighing in after winning a race at Randwick, but he was, in fact still wearing his tennis shorts.

My source for that story is Ern McQuillan himself.

Next week an even better photo of George Moore.
