A TRIBUTE TO A TRUE GENTLEMAN OF HARNESS RACING. BILL HANSELL 1932-2022.

Bill Hansell’s career in harness racing had just begun when the dual Academy Award winning movie “The Quiet Man” was released in 1952. The title of the famous John Wayne classic best describes the persona of Bill Hansell.

SYDNEY’S FIRST INTERDOMINION!

SYDNEY’S FIRST INTERDOMINION!

We recently stumbled upon some high quality photographs from the 1952 Interdominion series - the eleventh to be conducted and the very first at Sydney’s iconic Harold Park Paceway.

THERE’S ONLY ONE CORRECT HOPPLE LENGTH

THERE’S ONLY ONE CORRECT HOPPLE LENGTH

Stumbled upon this photo of a pacer called Pick On (Percy Hall) winning a qualifying heat of the 1952 Inter Dominion Championship at Harold Park. Note the “snug” hopple length on a horse who stood close to 17 hands.

A galaxy of star trotting horsemen assembled for this photo in the Penrith Paceway Function Centre at the end of the 1976/1977 racing season - a season which marked two significant milestones in the remarkable career of P.J. “Perc.” Hall.

HALWES WAS ONE OF THE BEST HORSES NEVER TO WIN AN INTER DOMINION

When it comes to horses I’m a hopeless sentimentalist. I had the pleasure of calling Halwes in all of his Harold Park wins in the late 1960’s and he left an indelible impression on me. He was a horse of high speed, great reserves of stamina and a terrific will to win.

CLUB MENANGLE TO HONOUR HARNESS RACING’S FALLEN

I was surprised when Club Menangle historian Peter Collier told me that forty trotting trainers and drivers have died in accidents since the sport began in Australia. In conjunction with his Victorian counterpart John Peck, Peter has worked tirelessly for years to identify the people involved and to trace the circumstances of their fatal accidents.

HONDO GRATTAN - GO GO GO YOU LITTLE BEAUTY

HONDO GRATTAN - GO GO GO YOU LITTLE BEAUTY

Stumbled upon a couple of photos of Hondo Grattan the other day. That’s all it takes to trigger memories of one of the most charismatic harness horses of all time. Did a quick check to learn that it’s coming up twenty five years since the little champ passed away at the Turnbull family’s Loyal Stud near Bathurst.
