Special events were held at race meetings around Australia on Saturday to mark National Jockeys Celebration Day. At Rosehill Gardens forty five former jocks gathered in the Marscay Room to swap a few yarns and reminisce about their days in the saddle. Guest of honour was former top apprentice and long time stipendiary steward Brian Killian who’s approaching his 90th birthday, making him the oldest former jockey to attend Saturday’s function. A special presentation was made by former champion jockey Kevin Langby, featuring a montage of photos from several phases of Brian’s racing life.
Later in the afternoon all guests were ushered to the mounting enclosure where retired riders were invited to walk through a guard of honour provided by jockeys competing on the day. The roles were then reversed. The Rev Colin Watts offered his blessing after which a minute’s silence was observed in honour of those who’ve passed on.
Congratulations to those involved in the organisation of a special day, especially Steve Hart whose administrative skills were complimented by his all too familiar role as official photographer. Steve sent me a few of the photos he snapped on the day.
