STEVE HART CATCHES UP WITH VICTORIA SHAW
A very good initiative by the Wyong Race Club was thwarted by extreme heat on Sunday January 25th. The last three races on the seven race card were abandoned when the temperature reached a level approaching the safety ceiling set by Racing NSW in 2018.
It was the Wyong Club’s initial involvement with the McGrath Foundation and a big crowd turned out to support the many fund raising activities taking place on the day in support of breast cancer awareness. A race for all female jockeys was programmed, and a special touch was added when Victorian race caller Victoria Shaw was invited to contribute to broadcasting duties on the day.
Victoria opened with a polished description of a 1200m maiden early in the day and was looking forward to calling the all girl’s event a few races later. She was understandably disappointed when racing was halted by the stewards.
Steve Hart wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to arrange an interview with Victoria the day prior to the race meeting. He talked to the charming broadcaster about the many obstacles she’s faced in her thirty year quest for recognition in a male dominated business. None of those setbacks have come close to denting her resolve. Steve was good enough to send me a copy of his chat with a very plucky lady.
