It was former race photographer Steve Hart who first floated the idea of a Sydney reunion to NSW Jockey’s Association CEO Tony Crisafi. Following a quick look at the logistics, Tony decided to run with it and the concept had its premiere at Randwick in 2019.
The next two editions were decimated by the Covid pandemic and it was 2022 before the reunion was regenerated at Randwick. The Marscay Room in the J.R. Fleming stand at Rosehill Gardens has been the venue for the last three gatherings.
Steve Hart and Tony Crisafi were pleasantly surprised when 65 former riders turned out on Saturday despite Sydney’s endless “big wet”. Several country based former riders tendered their last minute apologies. One “bushie” unfazed by the weather was former star rider Leon Fox who caught an early flight from Armidale. Attending his very first reunion was Anthony Cavallo who travelled from Mudgee.
Guest of honour was 90 year old Laurie Billett who was driven from Newcastle by daughter Lisa. Laurie, the oldest surviving rider of a Golden Slipper winner was very touched when given a special presentation in recognition of his many achievements.
Late in the afternoon all guests reported to the mounting enclosure for a special ceremony in which retired riders walked through a guard of honour provided by jockeys competing on the day. The roles were then reversed. The Rev. Colin Watts offered a blessing after which a minute’s silence was observed for those who’ve passed on.
Below you’ll find a selection of Steve Hart’s candid photos from a very successful day.
