JOCKEYS REUNION 2023

I enjoyed an afternoon with a host of former jockeys in the Marscay Room at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. The stories and reminiscences flowed freely throughout the day, and in the manner of a good fishing yarn a few exaggerations emerged. Midway through the afternoon the retired riders were invited to walk through a guard of honour provided by many of Saturday’s competing jockeys. The roles were then reversed as the veterans reciprocated. The Reverend Colin Watts offered a blessing to mark the occasion and a minute’s silence was observed for racing’s fallen heroes.

Full marks to the ATC who catered admirably for the event, and to NSW Jockey’s Association CEO Tony Crisafi and his staff for some great organisational work. Special mention of ace photographer Steve Hart who created the concept in 2019, and diligently assisted in the lead up. Former champion jockey Kevin Langby also assisted behind the scenes and was an interesting interviewee during the afternoon. Ron Quinton dashed upstairs between commitments to offer a heartfelt tribute to John Duggan who’s passed away a few days earlier. A great day was had by all, and it’s on again next year!
